1688 is the Chinese wholesale marketplace of the Alibaba group. Serbian firms search it when they want the same goods cheaper than Alibaba. Often the unit price is lower. Often there are more traders, more Chinese-only accounts, and more shops that are not a factory.
Buying from China covers the purchase order. This page is 1688 as a channel.
What 1688 is
- A catalogue aimed at the Chinese market, often without an export markup
- Useful research for MOQ (minimum order quantity) and a price band
- Useful when someone can read Chinese and call the plant
It is not a forwarder, not customs, not QC (quality control). An order on 1688 is not import from China.
What 1688 is not
It is not proof you buy from a factory. Many accounts are trading companies or local distributors. Translate on the listing is not a check of the address.
It is not automatically a cheaper landed cost. A lower piece price plus weak packing plus LCL (less-than-container load) plus duty without a certificate of origin (COO) can still lose to a higher Alibaba offer with clean papers.
1688 versus Taobao
Taobao is mainly a retail channel in China. Prices look attractive, but the account is often not wholesale, MOQ is small, and export documents are not standard. 1688 is closer to B2B buying: higher MOQ, factory or trader profiles, a clearer path from sample to series.
For a firm in Serbia the rule is the same on both platforms: one brief, a shortlist, an address check, a visit before a serious PO. Taobao can be a price or SKU reference. It is not a substitute for a supplier who can pass QC and import.
How a Serbian firm should use 1688
- Research: compare 1688 and Alibaba for the same SKU.
- Shortlist: 3–5 accounts, same brief.
- Check: address, type, willingness to host a visit. See China suppliers.
- Sample and PO in English or Chinese, with AQL (acceptable quality level).
- QC before shipment, then freight.
Without steps 3–5, 1688 is a cheap chat with an expensive risk.
Yuan on the listing is not the warehouse price
The figure is almost always at the gate, without freight, duty or VAT. MOQ on the listing often applies to a buyer inside China. Export quantity, marks and cartons for sea can be different. Ask that before the sample.
Finding whether an account is a factory or a trader takes 1–3 weeks, with someone who reads the shop and calls the address. Sample lead is usually 2–5 weeks, approved in writing. QC on a sourcing job above 2,000 USD happens before loading. Sea is about 35–52 days. The platform does none of those three for you.
Papers 1688 does not send by itself
The exporter on the invoice must be a company that can issue a COO if you count on the Serbia-China agreement from 1 July 2024. A 1688 shop is not that exporter until the name matches the licence. The HS (tariff) code goes into landed cost in two scenarios, with the certificate and without it. Zero duty is not a 1688 feature.
LCL is a common path for this volume. FCL (full container load) makes sense when several shops or one series approach a 20' or 40'. Mixing cargo without a separate invoice per shipper breaks both QC and origin. If the shop will not give a plant address, it stays a trader. You open the carton in their warehouse. You do not turn a 1688 photo into the gold sample.
A chat on 1688 is not a contract. The purchase order outside the platform carries material, measure, quantity, packing and who is the exporter on the invoice. If the sample comes from a drawer and the series from someone else’s stock, that is not the same lot.
Papillon on the ground reads the account, calls and visits the address when that is in scope. You get comparable quotes, not a screenshot. If you only need a catalogue, you can work alone. If you need a warehouse in Serbia, 1688 is an entrance. Buying from China is the order. Import from China is the paper and the vessel.
