Three words that stall a first import: MOQ meaning (minimum order quantity), sample and tool or mould. They are line economics. When you understand them, you negotiate better and avoid costs that later break landed cost.
MOQ meaning: minimum order quantity
MOQ is the smallest quantity a factory accepts per item (SKU), sometimes per colour or size. It comes from:
- line set-up time,
- raw materials bought in lots,
- packing and carton economics,
- mould capacity.
Types you will see
Per SKU
for example 1,000 pcs per model.Per colour
500 per colour.Mixed MOQ
2,000 total, min. 200 per variant.Value MOQ
for example min. 5,000 USD per order.
How to lower MOQ (realistically)
- Accept a standard colour / material instead of custom.
- Pay a higher unit price on a smaller run (often a fair trade).
- Combine SKUs at the same supplier (value MOQ).
- Use a trading partner for the first test, then move to the factory.
- Share a container / LCL so landed cost still works.
Do not expect a 10,000-piece automatic line to “just do 200” without a margin. That is maths, not an insult.
Sample as a small contract
A sample proves the supplier can do what they claim. Approve it in writing before the mass run. China sourcing agent covers the full process.
