Sea is still the backbone of commercial import from China into Serbia. The question is not “whether sea”, it is FCL (full container) or LCL (less-than-container load). A wrong choice eats margin through waiting, handling and damage.
Routes: Transport China-Serbia.
Quick definitions
FCL
you book a whole 20' or 40' (HC). Goods stay closed from load to unload (plus usual terminal procedures).LCL
you pay per CBM or weight in a shared container. Goods are consolidated and deconsolidated.
When FCL usually wins
- Volume near 15–28 CBM (20') or 50–68 CBM (40'/HC). Orientations, not a hard rule.
- Goods sensitive to mixing / theft / moisture from other shipments.
- You have a firm sailing plan and do not want LCL cutoff waits.
- Several SKUs from one factory / one warehouse in China.
- You count total cost per unit. FCL is often cheaper per CBM above the threshold.
When LCL makes sense
- Small volume (for example 2–10 CBM) and you will not “ship air”.
- A test series after sample.
- Several suppliers to consolidate through one agent / warehouse.
- Assortment where cash flow does not allow a full box.
Consolidation: Consolidation.
Hidden LCL costs
A low LCL ocean rate often hides:
- CFS handling both ends,
- a minimum charge per shipment,
- longer time in consolidation,
- more damage risk from extra handling,
- storage if documents are late.
Compare FCL or LCL on total cost factory to warehouse, not on the ocean line in a spreadsheet.
Hidden FCL costs
- You pay the whole box even when it is not full.
- Demurrage / detention if you are slow at the ramp.
- You need a better load plan (weight, stacking).
Transit (orientation)
| Mode | Typical (door-door orientation) |
|---|---|
| FCL sea plus last mile | Often faster and more predictable than LCL |
| LCL | Plus consolidation / deconsolidation interval |
| Air | Days to about 2 weeks, another price league |
Season (CNY, Golden Week, peak) moves everything. Buffer in the buying plan is not optional.
Simple threshold
Assume you have:
LCL all-in
X EUR / CBMFCL 20' all-in
Y EUR total
Threshold ≈ Y / your CBM. If your CBM makes FCL per CBM at or below LCL per CBM and the date is critical, pick FCL. At 6 CBM, LCL plus serious consolidation often stays logical.
Put it in landed cost. Structure example: 50,000 EUR example.
Mixed model firms use
Urgent SKUs
air or express LCLCore range
FCL monthly / quarterlySlow movers
LCL consolidation
Do not force one mode on the whole catalogue.
Invoice, packing list and origin proof for the FTA must be ready either way. LCL is late more often because of someone else’s papers in the same box. Pick a serious consolidator. FTA in force from 1 July 2024: FTA.
QC still happens before loading on jobs above 2,000 USD. Sea is about 35–52 days. Sample still takes 2–5 weeks before you know packed CBM.
Send CBM, weight and date via contact for a comparable FCL / LCL pair on this order.
Next step
Send the request: category, quantity, and date. You get a reply within 24 hours, with an outline of the total cost to destination where we can price it.
