Canton Fair in Guangzhou is still the largest open catalogue of Chinese industry for foreign buyers. For Serbian firms it can be strong research, or expensive tourism with a bag of leaflets. The difference is prep and follow-up discipline.
Hub page: Canton Fair.
What the fair is
- Phases by industry (check the current timetable before you fly).
- A mix of factories and trading companies.
- A chance to compare 10 suppliers in one day, if you have a brief.
It is not a magic hall where every plant quotes EU prices on the spot.
Before the trip
- Trip goal: for example 3 shortlisted suppliers for SKU X, not “see what there is”.
- Tech pack / sample board: without it you talk into air.
- Question list: MOQ, production lead, export markets, tool or mould, QC.
- Meetings booked: top 8–12 booths.
- Budget: samples, courier home, local transfers.
- Visa / hotel near Pazhou: time costs more than a hotel gap.
How to walk the halls
Morning
priority meetings.Afternoon
opportunistic research in the same hall.Evening
CRM notes the same day (booth photo, name, WeChat, quote request).
Without same-day notes, in a week you only have cards.
What to ask at the booth (5–7 minutes)
- Factory or trading company? Where is production?
- MOQ and usual production lead?
- Export to the EU / Balkans?
- Can they run our drawing?
- Sample price and lead?
- Who decides price?
Deeper check after the fair: Supplier check.
Samples from the hall
- Do not buy everything that shines, only what enters the RFQ.
- Ask for a production-intent sample, not showroom make-up.
- Plan courier or a consolidated sample return.
See MOQ, sample, tool.
Negotiate at the fair or after
At the fair you get a range. Real price often comes:
- after they see you are a serious buyer (volume),
- after a factory visit,
- after clear Incoterms (FOB port).
Do not sign a large deposit on hall energy.
14-day follow-up
Day 1–2: thanks plus tech pack. Day 3–7: formal RFQ (same for all). Day 7–14: shortlist 2–3 plus sample order. Day 14–30: remote check / line video.
Without this rhythm, Canton Fair becomes a PDF archive.
Alone or with a local team
Alone: fine if you have experience, English or Chinese support and time. With a local team: faster factory vs trader filter, help with meetings and visits after the hall.
Compare models: Sourcing agent or import alone and Desk broker or team on the ground.
After the hall: plant visit
The best return on Canton Fair is often not the booth, it is a factory visit in Guangdong on the same trip. Plan 1–2 days for Dongguan / Foshan / Shenzhen by category.
Typical mistakes
- Arrival without a tech pack.
- 40 cards, 0 CRM.
- Price only, zero on QC and COO / FTA papers.
- Mixing phases (wrong industry that day).
- Expecting everything cheaper than the current supplier without volume.
Frame: China sourcing, Sourcing guide.
What to carry
Bilingual cards if you can, tablet with tech packs offline, a notebook (WeChat QR disappears in the crush), power bank, shoes you can walk in, a tote for catalogues you digitise at night.
Score a booth in 90 seconds: real products or only roll-ups, talk of a plant or only “partners”, MOQ and lead on the spot, WeChat plus PDF the same day. If there is no clarity, mark low priority and walk.
The FTA in force from 1 July 2024 still needs HS and COO after a successful fair. The hall does not shorten customs.
