Does importing from China pay: when yes, when you should stop

Whether import from China into Serbia pays: quantity, margin, landed cost, MOQ, duty and when a local buy is cheaper than a first container.

Import · Payback · Ukupan trošak · Margin · China

“Does importing from China pay?” is a fair question. The answer is not always yes. It pays when landed cost (goods plus freight plus duty plus VAT plus fees) leaves a margin you can defend, and when quantity justifies waiting 8–16 weeks. It does not pay when “cheap from China” arrives as defect, delay or duty without papers.

Full chain: Import from China. Numbers: landed cost.

When it pays

  • Quantity

cartons and wholesale, not three pieces for Instagram.
  • Repeat

the first PO teaches, the second and third pay setup (MOQ, tool or mould, QC rhythm).
  • Clear spec

you know material, packing and a target warehouse price.
  • FTA where it applies

from 1 July 2024 duty from China can fall with a COO, only if HS allows it. Not a guarantee and not a known saving in advance.
  • Control before the vessel

QC costs less than a claim in Serbia.

Then import from China into Serbia usually beats local buying on unit price, if time and stock hold.

When it does not pay

  • A few pieces

express and local are often cheaper than LCL plus duty.
  • MOQ bigger than cash flow

a “great price” on 5,000 pcs is a loss if you sell 400.
  • No warehouse

a container from China does not sit free.
  • A 10-day fashion date

sea does not arrive. Air eats margin.
  • Unknown supplier plus 100% advance

that is not import, that is risk.
  • Hidden costs

local port fees, detention, a bad Incoterm. List: hidden import costs.

Rough math, no fake precision

Compare three scenarios on the same SKU:

  1. Buy local (finished price, now).
  2. Import from China, LCL, with duty and VAT.
  3. Import from China, full container, if volume exists.

If (2) or (3) do not beat (1) after QC and 2–4 months of waiting, do not import “because everyone imports”. If they do beat it, ordering from China makes sense, with papers and freight.

Small lots or a container

LCL from China is a tool for mid quantities: you pay your CBM. FCL drops unit cost when you approach a 20'. A first test often goes LCL or an air sample, not a 40' on day one.

More: FCL or LCL and transport China-Serbia.

Agent or alone

Importing alone pays if you have time, language and nerves for factory, QC and customs. An agent (a team on the ground, not an inbox) pays when the error costs more than the fee. Comparison: sourcing agent or import alone.

Papillon’s fee is a separate line. We do not hide it in the goods price. That is how you see whether import pays on numbers, not on feeling.

Short answer

Yes, if you have quantity, time and landed cost before confirmation. No, if you want three pieces tomorrow or you trust the lowest offer without QC.

The gate price lies when scrap from packing and QC is missing from the table. A cheap piece that breaks at sea is not cheap. Sea is about 35–52 days. If in that window the market price falls below your figure, the math was about timing, not only the plant.

The 1 July 2024 agreement enters only as an assumption with HS and COO. Count without it too. If margin stands only at zero, and the HS line does not carry zero, do not start. VAT remains even when duty is lower.
