How to find a plant in China and walk the line before deposit

How Serbian firms find plants in China, tell OEM production from a trading company, plan a visit and check the shop floor before they pay a deposit.

Factories in China are not an Alibaba account with a gold badge. For a firm in Serbia a factory means a line, capacity and who issues the invoice. This text is operational: where to look, what to ask, when to go in person.

The pillar stays on Factories in China. Supplier check: China suppliers.

1. Start from a cluster, not from all of China

Production is geographically specialised:

  • Shenzhen / Dongguan

    electronics, equipment
  • Foshan (Lecong, Shunde)

    furniture, ceramics, home décor
  • Guangzhou

    textiles, fashion, Canton Fair
  • Yiwu

small goods, often a trading company with a lower MOQ
  • Shanghai

    industry, machines, logistics

A wrong cluster costs more than a wrong platform. Furniture import and electronics import start from the city, then the plant.

2. Shortlist 3–5, not one chat

Same brief to all: spec, quantity, target price, date. Compare MOQ, production lead and whether they claim to be a factory. One quote 30% below the others is not luck. It is a signal.

Alibaba, 1688 and fairs are research. A visit is the filter. See China sourcing.

3. What to look at on a visit

  • Lines running, not an empty showroom
  • Raw and finished stock
  • QC station and defect records
  • Headcount versus stated capacity
  • Who signs the invoice and whether the address matches the licence

If an account cannot book a visit, treat it as a trading company. A trader is not always bad, but it must be labelled.

4. In person or Papillon instead of you

You do not have to go. A team on the ground runs the visit and a report. A personal business trip makes sense for a strategic SKU, a fair or brand alignment.

After the visit: sample, written PO, QC before shipment. Deposit goes only when you know who you pay.

5. From plant to warehouse in Serbia

A factory is not a forwarder. You still need freight, customs, FTA / COO and landed cost. That is import from China, not “order and wait”.

A visit is not tourism. Half a day to two days per cluster is enough if the list has five questions: which line runs your model, who invoices, where packing happens, who holds the tool, what the MOQ is. Foshan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Yiwu are not the same day. Do not chain them without addresses.

A shortlist of 3–5 accounts takes 1–3 weeks before the ticket. On site you do not pay the series. You write what you saw and what remains for the sample. Sample takes 2–5 weeks after that. Approval is in writing. Deposit waits for that paper and the spec.

QC is not part of the visit unless the series is already in cartons. On sourcing jobs above 2,000 USD, QC is standard before loading. Sea is about 35–52 days. Air carries a sample. It does not carry a capacity promise the hall did not show.

Landed cost is counted when you know packing. EXW and FOB are not that figure. The 1 July 2024 agreement wants HS and COO from the exporter you saw can issue it. If the plant will not be named, say so before deposit.

If you cannot travel, a remote check still wants licence, address and opening a sample. It is not a substitute for eyes in the hall when the deposit is large. Ticket and hotel are not inside the sourcing fee. The trip plan is a separate agreement.

Send a brief if you want a visit report that names the line, the invoicing entity and the packing bay, not a selfie in the lobby. Contact.
